Nurses Create Mosaic for Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital
Distinctive Art Source recently enjoyed working on a collaborative art program for the new Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. The art committee wanted an opportunity for the staff to work together as a team before the new facility opened.
Three mosaics (one on each floor), featuring images of sea, land and sky, were designed by mosaic artist Cindy Fisher incorporating dimensional ceramic works by Sikiu Perez. Nurses on all three units were invited to participate in the project during their training sessions for the new facility.
A plaque near the mosaic reads, “Together, the same hands that care for the children and their families on this unit every day created this mosaic.”
“While the move into our new hospital was very exciting, the staff training beforehand was stressful and filled with periods of intense learning,” recalls Jill Briggs, RN, CPN, Project Manager, Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital. “There was one unanimous activity, however, which provided a delightful diversion – the mosaic artwork. It brought so much joy and pride to every staff member, as they created together and were then able to share with the team after Go-Live. And now, 100 days after moving, so many of us still recall the fun every time we see the beautiful work done by our artist Cindy and our own teammates. It was a uniquely rewarding experience!”
