Intrepid Spirit Center – Fort Campbell
Fort Campbell, Kentucky
25,000 Square Feet, Budget: $45,000
Timeline: October 2013 – August 2014
Art Direction: To provide tranquil scenic images that also reflect the physical beauty of the surrounding area, which contains one of the largest remaining blocks of native prairie “barrens” east of the Mississippi.
Kentucky Park Series: Pastel artist Marianna McDonald, currently based in Lexington Kentucky, is a former Fort Campbell resident from the summer of 1971. In 2012 Marianna McDonald received a grant from the Kentucky Department of Parks to create a series of pastels from which the images featured in the center’s lobby are based.
“I fondly remember Ft. Campbell because it was my first home as a newly-wed before my husband was redeployed to Landstuhl Army Medical Center,” says McDonald. “We especially enjoyed nearby Kentucky Lake and Land Between the Lakes recreation area. The state of Kentucky is fortunate to have such beautiful and varied landscapes. I’m honored to display my work at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence and share my vision of Kentucky’s beauty with the soldiers and families of Ft. Campbell.”
US Army Digital Photo Contest Rotating Gallery: Each year, the US Army holds a digital photography contest in which winning entries are selected for their healing qualities and for their ability to connect with military families around the world. We felt that this was the perfect opportunity to feature images taken by active duty military, their families and retirees while inspiring patients, staff and visitors of the center with a fresh photographic journey that will rotate each year when new winners are selected.
