Art Challenge: Inova constructed a ten-floor women’s hospital in which to serve patients in OB-GYN, maternity, childbirth and oncology. Inova desired a spa-like feeling for their hospital, one that welcomed patients to place of healing, peace and rest. To achieve this, all art needed to coordinate and complement the soft-toned organic shaped interiors while providing tranquil connections to nature. With a diverse patient community, the Inova art committee expressed the importance of incorporating inclusive artwork of women that remained relatable through the depiction of women of multiple ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.
Art Solution: DAS helped Inova embrace the idea that through art, they could keep their patients close to nature in a manner that had the potential to reduce stress and help heal. To create a spa-like atmosphere, DAS proposed multimedia artwork that both supported and continued the hospital’s intentionally-designed natural “Zen” atmosphere. Soft abstracted nature macros, smooth stacked stones and inspiring portraits of woman in natural settings contribute to the unique tone of wellness and tranquility on each floor. Proposed artwork supported floor accent colors while identifying and supporting patient populations. While the LDR floor features beautiful portraits of active pregnant women, endearing infants and siblings, the art on the cancer treatment floor is more serene, and celebrates active women undergoing treatment. Art, architecture, interior finishes and fabrics combine to support and create the desired spa-like theme for Northern Virginia’s newest woman’s hospital.
