Children’s Health Specialty Centers redesigned existing non-clinical space to serve as specialty clinics and DAS was given the challenge of artfully enhancing design concepts that complemented clinic accent colors while playfully including friendly critters (birds, rabbits, squirrels and fish) chosen by the design team to create individual clinic identities.
The art program brought the critters to life and allowed them to become elements of wonder and whimsy. Critters in their habitats greet visitors at the entry to each clinic. Dimensional fish swim through a wall-sized river while squirrels hide in trees, birds perch on wires and rabbits hop through a forest. While exploring the clinic spaces, children are delighted to discover fanciful friends strategically located at corners and entryways to help guide children and visitors through the unit. Playful critters are found hopping or climbing around the unit – squirrels are perched on chair rails or doorframes while rabbits lead patients around corners and hide in quiet spaces to create delightful surprises.
