Children’s Hospital Central California

Madera, California
Architect: Karlsberger, Columbus, OH
60,000 Square Feet, Art Count: 132
Art Budget: $145,500
Timeline: December 2009 – April 2011

Located in the fertile San Joaquin Valley, Children’s Hospital Central California wished to create an art experience that would involve children and local artists while illustrating the importance of locally grown produce to the world market. Distinctive Art Source helped construct an art program for the West Wing expansion project that tells the story of “A Snowflake’s Travels.” Beginning high atop the Sierra Nevada Mountains, a single snowflake becomes a water drop in the foothills, moving across the San Joaquin Valley in rivers that join the Pacific Ocean. Different areas in the West Wing focused on each eco system the water traveled through.

DAS collaborated with The Rainforest Art Project to design a mosaic river wall created by children and residents from each of the 11 counties served by the hospital. “Fish Kits” were sent to children at Camp Sunshine Dreams where each dimensional fish was designed and completed by a team of campers. Festival goers in each service county help create the mosaic background which was then installed professionally.
