Riverside Regional Medical Center Unit Identity Project
Newport News, VA
Art Count: 11
Budget: $24,531.15
Timeline: January 2020 – August 2020
Project Type: Remodel / Wayfinding
RRMC’s new multi-story patient tower included 4 identical patient units per floor. DAS proposed and installed unique locally themed artwork on each patient unit to help establish unit identities. After opening staff and visitors alike had wayfinding issues at Unit entry points. Internally and externally Patient Units were referred to by Room numbers, Cardinal directions and or type of unit (Cardiac etc.) Without consistency in language used to direct people to the units, there was confusion.
DAS designed large scaled artful / graphic entry portals at the entry of each unit. The portal designs included an easily referenced locally themed name for the unit along with imagery that visually reinforced the new unit’s name.
Unit Names included:
2nd Floor: Unit Identities included Meadows, Prairie, and Woodlands
4th Floor: Unit Identities: Yorktown, Jamestown, Williamsburg and Universities and Colleges
5th Floor: Eastern Shore, Beach, Watermen, Tidewater, and Marsh
