Riverside’s goal was for the art program at Shore Memorial Hospital to authentically portray the textural beauty of Virginia’s Eastern Shore through memorable locale specific artwork. DAS was challenged to visually depict life on all areas of the Eastern Shore including seaside, bayside and landside; and to select artwork that illustrates life as a waterman, farmer, migrant worker and generational resident.
Through the use of texture and perspective, the art program portrays unexpected views of everyday life on the Eastern Shore. Subtle shades of blues create a world of serene tonality as they turn to grey from water to sky and back again. With the colors of the Eastern Shore as inspiration, the art program creates a sense of natural peacefulness that is unique to the area and one of the reasons families call this land home for generations. And rich natural textures found in the water, shore and on land in agricultural fields, offer focal points and surprising elements of interest.
